Marguerite Duras, the famed French writer, grew up in Vietnam and set her autobiographical novel, The Lover, in Sa Dec in the Mekong Delta. Since it's publication in 1984 this novel has been translated into over 40 languages and tells to tale of a love affair between a French colonial fifteen year old and older Chinese man. With a languorous atmosphere but an unsentimental eye, Duras describes the region she knew so well.
