The full name of Utagawa Yoshikazu’s 19th century triptych is ‘Minamoto no Mitsunaka Sumiyoshi sanro mojigen (Apparition of the thunder god at Sumiyoshi Shrine before Minamoto no Mitsunaka)’. In this depiction, the thunder god takes the form of a dragon flying out of the storm, witnessed by a group that includes Minamoto no Mitsunaka – who was a real-life samurai in the Heian period.
