Read more about Matt here:

Matthew Regier is an artist and printmaker living in Matfield Green, KS (15 miles south of Strong City). He is a co-manager of The Bank Artspace, a contemporary art gallery in Matfield Green. The majority of his work responds directly to the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Most of the images on display here explore riparian areas where the prairies give way to trees and shrubs.

These works are all single-block relief prints, most of them printed by hand on Japanese papers. The precision of the cut line generates a stark contrast between pure white and black. The resulting image has an optical depth that is generated by the viewer’s ability to interpret the marks in terms of light and shadow.

Natural surfaces, whether prairie or woodland, are replete with information that we typically ignore or simply cannot interpret. This work attempts to point towards that complexity without decoding it.
